This project, designed by Wei Wang, stands out with its unique approach to a single-story residence. The initial phases involved rational distribution of public and private areas, ensuring a smooth flow of space tailored to the clients' needs. A row of double-sided cabinets subtly divides the corridor-shaped entryway from the combined dining and kitchen area, providing both ample storage and an intriguing spatial arrangement.
The realization of this design involved careful consideration of the existing structural elements. Beams crossing the center of the public area and above the corridor inspired the use of extremely fine veneer to create a twilled transition area from the entryway to the living room and dining room. The integration of air-conditioning equipment, recessed lighting, and light strips, along with rounded and white ceilings, creates a seamless and visually elevated experience throughout the space.
With a total area of 182 square meters, this residence offers a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The living room, island dining area, and kitchen share the same depth of field and complementary functions, while the custom-made stone patterned melamine TV wall adds a touch of uniqueness and ample storage. The scattered stone pattern across the public area ties the design concept together, creating a cohesive and visually striking space.
The project was completed in June 2021 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure optimal functionality and visual appeal. The entryway, for example, features a large black mirror, high cabinets, and linear light strips that provide storage, refrigerator placement, and flow guidance. The clever use of reflections and shadows eliminates the sense of closure in the corridor, while custom-made stone patterned panels beautify the two-way cabinets and enhance the horizontal line of sight.
The design team faced several challenges in bringing this vision to life. The double arced ceilings in the living room and dining area, as well as the wooden spliced ceilings between the entryway and the corridor, required exceptional craftsmanship. The asymmetrical shape of the headboard in the master bedroom not only adds visual interest but also cleverly incorporates the original window into the design.
Wei Wang's Guide of the Light is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating a harmonious and functional living space. This project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness in improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
